Gone But Not Forgotten

Caldor

1951–1999

The Northeast's big discount trip.

The Northeast discount chain that styled itself the upscale answer to Kmart — the place families hit for back-to-school clothes, toys, housewares, and everything in between at a bargain. A regional institution from Connecticut through the Mid-Atlantic. Debt from a botched expansion sank it, and it was liquidated in 1999.
