The Mandela Effect

Gen X edition: 43 things we all remember wrong.

We were the last generation whose childhood wasn't automatically recorded — so when a million of us remember the same logo, spelling or movie line the same wrong way, there was no screenshot to settle it. Each case file below shows what you remember next to what the record says. Vote, then tell us where you were when you learned it.

Questions

What is the Mandela Effect?
A shared false memory: a large number of people remembering the same thing the same wrong way — a spelling, a logo, a movie line — with total confidence. It's named for the many people who remembered Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s (he was released in 1990 and died in 2013).
Why are so many Mandela Effect examples from the '70s, '80s and '90s?
Because that's when the biggest shared culture happened without a searchable record. Gen X saw the same three networks, the same cereal boxes and the same VHS tapes, and nobody could check a screenshot. The memories spread by word of mouth and got edited on the way.
Did any of these actually change?
A few really did — Cup O' Noodles became Cup Noodles in 1993, for example — and we flag those as genuine changes. The Mandela Effect proper is the cases where the record never moved and the memory did.
Can I add my own memory?
Yes. Every case has a vote (which version do you remember?) and a Memory Wall where you can write where you were when you learned it the 'wrong' way. No account needed.
