The orange-roofed roadside icon that practically invented the American family road trip — 28 flavors of ice cream, fried clam strips, and a turnpike outpost every few exits. Motels carried the name for decades, but the restaurants dwindled through the '80s and '90s; the very last Howard Johnson's restaurant closed in 2022.
