Gone But Not Forgotten

Montgomery Ward

1872–2001

The catalog and the department-store trip.

The pioneering mail-order house that grew into a full department store — the phone-book-thick catalog you circled toys in, the appliance and tool floors, and the holiday toy department at the mall anchor. It never quite kept pace with Sears and the discounters. After 128 years, the company liquidated and the stores closed in 2001.
