Gone But Not Forgotten

Woolworth's

1879–1997

The five-and-dime with the lunch counter.

The original five-and-dime that anchored Main Streets for generations — creaky wood floors, bins of penny candy by the register, a pet department with parakeets and goldfish, and a sit-down lunch counter where you could get a grilled cheese and a Coke. Its downtown model couldn't survive the malls and discounters. F.W. Woolworth closed its last U.S. variety stores in 1997.
