A tube is the hollow of a breaking wave and the best place a surfer can be. Tubular came inland with the Valley girls and became the punchline word for anything great, usually said with a totally in front of it.
It died faster than rad because it never meant anything to anyone who hadn't seen a wave. The Turtles kept it on life support.
