Hasbro shrank G.I. Joe to Star Wars size in 1982, gave every figure a file card with a name and a hometown, and built an army. Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Destro, and vehicles that got bigger every year until the aircraft carrier.

The file cards were the genius part: kids memorized birthplaces and specialties for plastic soldiers. The line ran to 1994 and the swivel-arm figures with their tiny rubber O-rings are still traded by the thousands.
