Danny Elfman wrote it in a couple of days, said it was the most-heard thing he'd ever compose, and was right. The couch gag changed every week; the theme didn't have to.
For Gen X it's the sound of Sunday at 8, of the show that was cooler than everything else on TV. Elfman's wrote the Batman theme the same year.
