Not the first video game, but the first one that made money. Atari put a prototype in a Sunnyvale bar in 1972 and it broke within days because the milk carton holding the quarters overflowed.
Pong was in bars before it was in arcades, which is why older Gen X remembers it next to a beer their dad was drinking. The home version in 1975 sold through Sears and started the whole living-room industry.
