The Story
The Jelly Beans were an American rhythm and blues vocal group from Jersey City, New Jersey. This collection of five high school friends found their groove in the early '60s and signed with Red Bird Records, the label masterminded by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They teamed up with hit-making duo Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich to release “I Wanna Love Him So Bad,” a catchy tune that showcased their soulful harmonies. Although their follow-up, “Baby Be Mine,” didn’t quite reach the same heights, their sound was unmistakable, blending youthful exuberance with classic R&B. Despite a promising start, the group disbanded in 1966, leaving behind a memorable slice of early pop history.
