The Story
The Sugarcubes was an alternative rock band from Reykjavík, Iceland, active since 1986. Known for their eclectic sound, they blended quirky melodies with distinctive vocals, primarily featuring Björk Guðmundsdóttir and Einar Örn Benediktsson. The group also included guitarist Þór Eldon, bassist Bragi Ólafsson, keyboardist Margrét "Magga" Örnólfsdóttir, and drummer Sigtryggur Baldursson, with Friðrik Erlingsson and Einar Melax contributing earlier on. Their track "Birthday" remains a standout, showcasing their playful yet edgy style. Though they disbanded in 1992, the Sugarcubes left a unique imprint on the alternative rock scene, combining artful lyricism with an experimental spirit that paved the way for future Icelandic musicians.
