Burger Chef
1954–1996
“The kids' meal before the Happy Meal.”
Restaurants

The flame-broiled burger chain that, at its peak, rivaled McDonald's in sheer store count. It gave us the Works Bar — a build-your-own toppings station — and the Funmeal, a boxed kids' meal with a toy that predated the Happy Meal (and sparked a lawsuit over the idea). Parent company General Foods sold it to Hardee's, and the last Burger Chefs were converted away by 1996.
