Ad executive Bill Backer was stranded at an Irish airport and watched strangers share Cokes, and wrote the idea on a napkin. The commercial, shot on a hill outside Rome, became the most famous ad of the decade.
The song was so popular that a version without the brand name went to the Top 10. It closed the Mad Men finale in 2015, which is how a lot of younger people met it. Older Gen X met it between cartoons.
