Floppy plush dogs with sad eyes, sold in a box shaped like a dog pound, with papers to adopt them. Tonka, a truck company, had the biggest plush hit of the mid-'80s.
The adoption idea was borrowed from Cabbage Patch and the sad face did the rest. There were Pound Purries for cats, a cartoon, and a 1988 movie, and every kid's bedroom had at least one puppy with a chewed ear.
