They started as greeting-card art and became the plush toy of 1983: ten bears, each with a symbol on its belly that told you which feeling it was in charge of. Tenderheart, Grumpy, Funshine.
The Care Bear Stare, where they lined up and beamed love out of their stomachs, was the cartoon's big weapon and the playground's biggest joke. Kenner sold tens of millions before the '80s ended.
