The file

Five buttons, a joystick, a scanner at the top of the screen, and a difficulty curve designed to eat quarters. Defender was the game the good players owned and everyone else fed for thirty seconds.

It was the first scrolling shooter with a world bigger than the screen, and the smart bomb and hyperspace made it a panic simulator. The sound of a humanoid falling to its death is a specific 1981 dread.
