The file
The most famous product failure of the decade. Losing taste tests to Pepsi, Coca-Cola changed its 99-year-old formula and told America the new one was better. America did not agree, loudly, on the news, every night, for eleven weeks.
The old recipe came back as Coca-Cola Classic that July and the company's sales went up, which launched a conspiracy theory that the whole thing was planned. New Coke hung around as Coke II until the early 2000s, mostly unnoticed.
It briefly returned in 2019 as a Stranger Things tie-in. The complaint hotline did not.
