Before Red Bull was in every gas station, there was Josta: a dark, fruity soda with guarana and a panther on the can, sold with the line "better do the good stuff now." It was PepsiCo's early bet on caffeine as a lifestyle.
It was also about five years early. Energy drinks became a category after Josta was gone, and Pepsi pulled it in 1999 to focus on Mountain Dew. A few thousand people signed a petition to bring it back; nothing came of it.
