Frozen pudding, which is a different thing from ice cream and, to a child in 1984, clearly better. The pops had a dense, fudgy bite and a thin layer of frost on the outside that you scraped off with your teeth first.
They sold enormously in the '80s and then faded out in the '90s. The 2000s Popsicle version used a different process and never got the texture, which is why the original still tops frozen-treat nostalgia lists.
